EAPA releases latest ‘Asphalt in Figures’
The Latest ‘Asphalt in Figures’ is out now!
The European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) released a report examining asphalt pavement data from across Europe in 2023.
“The latest data highlights the asphalt industry’s commitment to Europe’s decarbonization and sustainability, integrating circular economy practices and innovative technologies like lower-temperature asphalt. However, a drop in production to below pandemic levels, and comparable to the 2014 economic crisis low, signals concern for the road sector. Insufficient investment in road construction and maintenance risks serious consequences, underscoring the urgent need for increased funding and strategic planning.”
📊 Key Highlights
Total production decline: In 2023, total asphalt production fell to 202.7 million tonnes in EU-27 and 269.0 million tonnes including additional European countries—a 4,6% and 3,7% drop respectively, bringing production levels below those recorded during the pandemic.
Significant Circular Economy: In the countries providing full data of the use of the available Reclaimed Asphalt, an average of 76% was re-used, 20% was recycled, and only 4% ended up in unknown applications or put to landfill.
Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) expansion: The market share of WMA production in reporting countries grew to an average of 18,3%, with some countries reaching nearly 30%, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable, lower-temperature asphalt solutions.
