Airfield paving webinar series set for November

Jean-Paul Fort at the NAPA 2024 Midyear Meeting in Brooklyn.

NAPA Director of Pavement Engineering & Innovation Jean-Paul Fort will moderate a three-part series of webinars on airfield paving starting Nov. 15.

The first installment of NAPA’s Airfield Paving: Navigating Pre-Bod, Production, & Construction Challenges webinar series will offer an hour of expert presentations followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session with speakers Harry Bush of Vulcan Materials and Marty McNamara with Granite Construction. Ben Cox, with the U.S. Army Engineering Research & Development Center will deliver an introduction.

The Part 1 session is scheduled for Nov. 15 at 12:30 p.m. ET. Participants will learn about the differences between airport and highway pavements, specifications reviews, risk assessments, subgrade evaluation, and mix design for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) projects.

While Part 1 focuses on the Pre-Bid phase, Part 2 on Nov. 18 will center on the Post-Bid, Pre-Production phase of airfield pavement construction. ABATECH President Geoff Rowe will present on quality control practices like stockpile management, production control, non-conformity handling, and performance testing. The session begins at 12:30 p.m. ET with a Q&A to follow.

The final webinar in the series will explore best practices in paving operations, grade control, joint density, and technologies like intelligent compaction and thermal imaging. Wirtgen’s Tom Kowalski and Caterpillar’s Todd Mansell will present on Nov. 20 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
