IMPACT takes on AI, leading with precision

The asphalt pavement industry’s emerging leaders are in Washington, D.C. this week for programming aimed at reimagining corporate culture, embracing artificial intelligence, and activating leadership skills.
IMPACT Leadership Group Committee nominations due Sept. 28.
The IMPACT Leadership Group Conference kicked off Wednesday morning with an examination of the power of reflection and collection led by Marvin Joles. The owner of Wis-Coat in Wisconsin and host of the In The Mix podcast talked about what it means to lead with precision.

XBE’s Matt Lerner took the stage next, leading attendees on an exploration of agentic AI that started with implementations that are already working in the asphalt pavement industry. He said companies aiming to get results should start with a single workflow and focus on eliminating inefficiencies while aiming to lessen the workload for top employees.
After a networking break, DCM Founder Dr. Claire Muselman led attendees through activities that revealed emotional intelligence through body language while explaining how leaders can engage with employees through connection.

Author Jason O. Harris showed the value of communication through an ambiguous assignment that prohibited team members from talking or gesturing to one another. The results revealed leadership skills through who took charge, who sat back, and who didn’t read the instructions.
Finally, Three and Jackie Carpenter, authors of People First, laid out five steps for enhancing the employee experience, which they traced from recruiting and onboarding to development, recognition, and retention.
IMPACT Secretary David Greenberg offered closing remarks to wrap up the day and encouraged attendees to learn more about how they can support the reimagined IMPACT Leadership Group Scholarship.
