TRB releases report on reducing asphalt’s carbon footprint

NAPA members and research partners helped contribute to a new report released by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) on sustainable asphalt practices that can lead to lower carbon emissions.

“Day to Day Practices to Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Asphalt,” was sponsored by TRB’s Standing Committee on Asphalt Pavement Construction and Rehabilitation (AKC60) and co-sponsored by the Standing Committee on Asphalt Materials Selection and Mix Design (AKM30).

The document is based on a workshop of the same name that was presented at the 103rd TRB Annual Meeting, held in January 2024.

University of Nevada-Reno’s Adam Hand, who chairs the AKC60 committee, wrote the introduction and summary of key takeaways along with Tim Aschenbrener of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

In its acknowledgments section, the committee recognizes Ben Bowers of Auburn University, Ben Cox with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Brian Diefenderfer with the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), Asphalt Institute’s Dave Johnson, Cheng Ling with Pike Industries, and Greg Renegar of Astec Industries for their planning and organization of both the workshop and the document.
