A world fair of asphalt pavement topics

Carsten Karcher

Explore sustainability efforts with panelists from Australia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates in a discussion moderated by Carsten Karcher with the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA). Karcher will also lead a discussion on EAPA and Asphalt 4.0. Panelists include:

  • Ibrahem Shatnawi, UAE – KAPSARC
  • Henrique Borges-Miranda, Portugal – ISEL
  • Lauren SeBlonka, UK – On behalf of The Department of Transport
  • Greg White – Australia

Asphalt 4.0 features in a separate discussion on environmental product declarations (EPDs) as well, in a session that examines what the asphalt pavement industry’s future may look like given the combined forces of innovation, resource efficiency, and decarbonization that continue to shape everyday practice. Panelists Ben Ciavola with WAP Sustainability, Louay Mohammad of Louisiana State University, and Taylor Linnell with Built Cold will discuss, led by moderator Joseph Shacat with ERG.

Best practices from sea to shining sea

The International Summit will also showcase domestic projects and innovations from the Greater Chicagoland region, with representatives from state and local agencies from Chicago, the Illinois Tollway, and the Indiana Department of Transportation describing their cutting-edge sustainability work in sessions that aim to share best practices and celebrate long-lasting pavements.

John Harvey with the University of California-Davis will moderate a session that explores academic projects selected as part of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Climate Challenge Program:
