NAPA, University of Florida seek millings samples for PFAS research

The University of Florida (UF) is entering a critical phase of research on PFAS in asphalt pavements—and NAPA members can help.

Through work supported by the Airport Asphalt Pavement Technology Program, UF researchers are expanding efforts to analyze reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and reclaimed concrete aggregate (RCA) from across the country. The goal: build a more geographically diverse dataset to better understand PFAS concentrations in typical milling stockpiles.

While elevated PFAS levels have been identified in pavements associated with firefighting activities like airfields, researchers expect those concentrations are not representative of most pavement sources. Confirming that assumption is a key gap this next phase aims to address.

NAPA is working to connect researchers with producers nationwide and has identified gaps in geographic coverage. Members willing to provide RAP samples are encouraged to get involved.
